Liberal is not really the opposite of conservative. In fact, I suggest you look at politics as a circle. The far right and far left actually stand for much the same thing, but for very different reasons. For example. The far right is against pornography because it is considered evil, bad for you, addictive, etc. The far left is against pornography because it exploits women. The same outcome, but very different reason leading to the outcome.
In an American context, the circle would have conservative next to libertarian, libertarian next to liberal and liberal next to conservative forming the circle.
Back to your original question. Progressive in modern times is considered pretty much the same thing as liberal, but historically, this is not so. Progressive should really be those who are seeking progress or needed change. A conservative or liberal could fall under this banner depending upon your personal view of needed change. Liberals and Conservatives both feel like progressive change is need, but in different ways on the circle.
In the most literal sense the opposite of progressive is regressive, but it does not really fit into the political equation.

A regressive. Since Progressives and liberals are the same maybe we can safely say that conservatives are Regressives.
I do know lately the Republicans seem to be in favor of obstructing the will of the people led by their fearless leader GW Bush.

Conservative, progressive is only a term used by liberals who don't want to sound too "liberal".

Conservative, since "progressive" is just used by people who are ashamed to be called liberal but it has the same meaning.

That pretty much depends upon whom you ask.
Don't SP's claim they are the classic Liberals? I call those people Puritans.
I guess the opposite of a Puritan would be a Baptist.

Progressive is another word for liberal. When liberals realize that we have figured out how evil and stupid their schemes are, they have to use another word to describe themselves in hopes of fooling people into believing they are something other than liberals.
