George Patton was probably the most brilliant military strategist that ever served in any army of the world . . . He and his men captured more territory from the Germans in less time and with fewer casualties than any other commander in World War II . . . It has been estimated that if it weren't for his leadership in battle, the war would have continued for another two years . . .
But, though Patton was known for his love of his soldiers and his desire to keep them safe while punishing the enemy to the maximum, he was also very demanding of them and pushed them to perform at heroic levels . . . He was severely criticized for berating one soldier, who left his unit and sought help at a hospital because he was overcome by fear on the battlefield . . . His career was blemished by what some thought was his insensitivity to the man's condition . . .
I knew a man who served with Patton and told me that everyone hated him when he trained them hard and long without rest but, loved him when they went into battle . . They realized that the skills and stamina that he built into them with that hard training was keeping them alive and victorious with the toughness to deal with the worst conditions . . . My friend said that Patton was the greatest man he ever had the privilege to serve with . . .

Patton was/is an interesting study. Very intelligent. Many interests. Loved by his troops but not by superiors so much. Bucked tradition and did things his way and made it to General.
