~At the end of the Seven Years War, of which the so-called "French and Indian War" was but a minor theater, Spain ceded her Florida interest to Great Britain in the Treaty of Paris. However, it only lasted for twenty years and the Brits ceded Florida back to Spain in 1783 via the Treaty of Versailles. In 1819, by the Adams-Onís Treaty, Florida was traded by Spain to the US in exchange for a waiver of US claims to Texas. The area around St. Augustine and Seminole county was purchased from Spain for $2.5 million by the US under Thomas Jefferson in conjunction with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
