The above are both good and dark, but the closest thing that I have ever seen to being scary was Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. I know of a few people who have gotten nightmares from watching this show XD.

I've never really seen a scary anime. There's some dark ones like :
- Hellsing
- Blood
- Death Note (More on the psychological)
- Elfen Lied and Gantz (More on the gore side)
- Boogie Pop Phantom
- Vampire Princess Miyu
- Pet Shop of Horrors
But seriously, they're never THAT scary. The caries one I found would probably hentai. ^_^

If you like really dark (literally) animes and like watching a lot of main characters die, watch Basilisk which is 24 episodes long. It's about two lovers from two different villages who want to end the war between each other's homes. This anime is almost like Romeo and Juliet---ninja style!

there aren't really any scary or dark animes. I would say Deathnote. It's about this human boy who found a death book. By writing the name of anyone in the book and how he/she would die, that person would die that way.

petshop of horrors. i don't find it 'scary', just a bit 'dark-humoured' if you will and very well-made.

I would recommend Hellsing.
It didn't scare me but it teffified my friend.

ummm idk of any really scary ones..... have you watched elfen lied or blood+??? those are great!
