I work as an accountant for the government. I have passed 3 of the 4 sections of the CPA exam and I am taking the last section next month. I am looking to get licensed in CA. Will not working for a public firm deter me from getting licensed?

Thanks for your input. I want to become a CPA; I was asking if government experience counted towards getting your license.

Passing the test doesn't make you a CPA you need experience. A few private companies might have the ability to get you the experience but 99% work in CPA firms.
If you don't want to work on audits you don't need to be a CPA a CMA may work better for you. They are Certified Management Accountants which is a different test. You can take both test and the second one counts some parts from the first last time I looked. I passed the CPA exam in 91 but had enough experience to be licensed and looked at adding a CMA but haven't looked since.

No, all the licene means is that you qualify to work an a CPA in that state, it does NOT force you to be a CPA. Look at all the politicos, who graduated from law school and passed the bar, but never practiced law a day in their lives.
