I wondered (after reading about somebody wanting horse steaks) why do people have a problem with eating animals (like horses) that we normally consider pets? Why is it we can eat deer and turkey, but not horses and, say, parrots or canarys? My dad always tells me that Chinese chefs (in China) put dogs in their food, I don't know if thats true but the idea is very repulsive to me. Also a lady in our town ate a cat and of course she was fined for animal abuse, but I'm sure people in other countries eat cats and don't think twice. I hope you all can understand what my question is and I hope I'm not "rambling".

I hope anybody who reads this understands I would never eat a horse, dog or cat or any animal that is considered a pet. I can't stand it when people talk of feeding horses to dogs!

It is simply how you are raised and the culture you are brought up in.

Here its not 'kosher' to eat horses, but in france its a delicacy.

Here we eat cows, but to some religions its obscene.

There are tribes of indians that have 'dog ceremonies' where a dog is killed and eaten.

I personally couldn't eat horse meat, but am not going to diss someone that does. I would rather see a horse being used for something than left to suffer and die a slow painful diseased death.

Most people consider it disgusting because of the nature of our relationships with them. How many people have cows living in their houses here in the US? Well probably none. So we haven't really developed that same bond that we have developed with say a dog or cat.

This is further evidenced by the fact that many people that would say eat chicken as par of their normal diet, couldn't imagine eating that same chicken if they had raised it themselves.

By tradition a horse is thought of as a pet and not as a food source in our country. Not so in other countries. In fact the US government has made it illegal to eat horse meat here.

People don't understand survival or biology. They get there food already prepared. They don't have to kill and prepare their own food anymore. People get emotionally attached to ideas. Some ideas make no sense. We hold on to them because they seem "nice". Animal flesh/protein is food. It's that simple. Some carry more risk than others regarding illness and parasites. But in the end it's food.
People tend to forget that humans are by nature killers. It's as natural for a person to kill to eat as it is for a lion. Again, technology and psychology are there. We don't have to, so why?

Good question.
