My dog was accidently left in my room while everyone was out. He ended shredding a large chunk of the carpet behind the door and now there is a gaping hole with nails sticking out. What is the best (and cheapest) way to fix it?

If you have any "leftover carpet you could "splice" in a piece.
An alternative would be for you to go to a carpet stores and look for remnants that are close in color/design. You said it's behind a door, so you might consider taking out a larger section and splice in a "band" width. It can be done with carpet tape, carpet glue. And pound down the protruding nails.

nothing will work unless you replace the carpet in the entire room. If thats not an option and you want it to look the nicest a huge hole can look cover it up with an area rug (put some padding underneath) or put a peice of furniture there

Get a matching piece, cut out the bad spot and use carpet tape to put in the new piece. My dog did that too.
