It has holes in it like a hive and is on the ceiling. Could it be mold? or maybe some kind of insect housing? I have never seen anything like it.

Most likely, it's yellow jackets or wasps. Spray killer on it late at night and RUN!

It sounds like a nest of dirt daubers. They are wasp-like bugs. If you don't see any thing flying around, it is likely an old nest and you can just clean it away. If you see wasp/hornet looking insects flying around, better run to the store for a can of Raid!

sounds like mud wasps. we have them at work in the doorways. the janitors just poke at them with a broom handle until they break off
