in todays time, it can be used to help save electricity at certain time of the year. since electricity is used more in the evenings than early mornings, setting the time one hour ahead can help reduce the use of electricity during the evening hours, especially when most people sleep later than 10:00pm. instead of turning on your lights at 6:30 pm, it will be at 7:30pm, and you dont leave the light on as long before you go to sleep. it wouldnt make much of a difference during the early mornings, since most people dont wake up very early in the morning.

Clocks were initially set forward in the autumn for the agricultural advantage of having more time/daylight in the evening for farming activities (harvesting).
They were set back in the spring for the earlier morning activities like planting. Also, to equalize the time difference, otherwise we'd end up eventually losing a day and having to come up with another Leap Year.
This was later adopted by most of the U.S. and it also provided more evening daylight for non-work activities as farming became more of a subsidized/import industry.
Parts of Indiana don't participate at all in DST.

To save daylight, to put it simply. Otherwise it would get dark too early for most poeple to enjoy. In the spring, however, the extra daylight is coming from long summer days so there's no need to set the clocks back.

There is no point (anymore - we are no longer an agrarian society). I would say the point of daylight savings time is to make life more annoying for everybody.

It is another nanny plan of the federal government who thinks we can't operate our lives unless we let them tell the states how to manage their daylight. Some states op out. Smart states!
