Add a cup of white vinegar in the final rinse. Don't use liquid softeners on towels. It makes them less absorbent and to me the towels stick when you dry on them.=)

The towels may have a bit of a mildew problem. Using too much fabric softener can cause the towels to not absorb or dry as they should and can leave a bad smell if left alone. Try adding non-chlorine bleach to your next laundry load of towels. The musty smell will come out. All you will smell is clean!

Add white vinegar with your laundry soap and again in the final rinse. Dry the towels on high heat and make sure they are completely dry before folding and putting away.
When rinsed with white vinegar, the towels should be soft and have a pleasant smell so there is no need to use fabric softener or dryer sheets. Fabric softener tends to leave a residue on towels that effect the absorbency.

If it is a true musty smell, then did the towels get heaped wet someplace that allowed mildew to grow? You may not notice the mildew if they are darker color towels. Try washing with detergent and a heaping scoopful of oxy. I would even let them soak a bit in the washer.
If it is just a sour smell, then you need to wash them more often. Good Luck!

Hanging wet towels and wash cloths until dry will prevent that smell. Never put anything damp in with other dirty laundry. Now, since you have the problem, re wash the towels with laundry detergent and add a cup of baking soda. You may also want to try adding Borax (Sold as Twenty team Mule) in grocery stores in my area. Good luck.

They need to be laundered in hot soapy water and hung out to dry in the sun.
If you don't do this, the next step will be that black mould stains will appear and they will fall apart.
This happens a lot at the coast.
Always open your bathroom windows to get rid of humidity and steam after bathing and showering and don't keep any wet towels in the bathroom, but place them in the dryer before placing in the washing basket.

When you wash them, sprinkle some baking soda in with the detergent. Rather than fabric softener, use vinegar for the rinse cycle.

Wash them first, and then put 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the soak cycle, rinse and dry.
