It was not only oppression and punishment, it was a federal government bleeding the wealth of South and taking it North. Much of what occurred during reconstruction was anti-constitutional and could only be justified by the case of Texas v. White [1869] which opined that many of the acts of the federal government were only justified due to the Right of Conquest. Such was applicable only if the Confederacy was a foreign country when invaded by the Union federal government.
