"For example, the National Scruples and Lies Survey 2004 polled 5,000 women in the United Kingdom for That's Life! magazine. According to that survey, 42% of women claim they would lie about contraception in order to get pregnant, regardless of the wishes of their partners."

This is just one poll, of course, but it's not the only one to unearth such findings. The editor of that magazine correctly suggested that this is equivalent to "playing Russian roulette with people's lives," and yet feminists seem to think this is rare and/or not worth worrying about. I personally know two people who were trapped like this. Neither were high earners, but both women wanted to get married, and they thought "missing" a few of their pills would be a good step in that direction.

So we know the problem exists. The real question is, why do feminists feel the need to downplay the severity? Spitefulness? Embarrassment?

GoldenGirl: Thanks for the response. Your complete lack of reading comprehension almost made me die from laughter. I needed that. :)

Any man who trusts a woman to remember her birth control is an idiot. The reason feminists don't care about this issue is that it is an example of inequality working in the woman's favor, and damn the fact that it screws up the kid's life too!

Bad women. To me, it's even more proof why men should handle things on their end as well. Missing a couple pills has the most impact if the partner isn't wearing a condom or demanding a second form of birth control.

I think women shouldn't do that, whether it's to trap or man or simply because they want a baby. If you want a child you should find a willing participant first.

Getting pregnant without the consent of your partner is never very smart. I know that accidents can always happen but entrapment is not a good route to use to get married. When things dont work out the women are almost always the ones left to raise the children which can become a burden since child support never covers half of the costs. I dont know that feminists downplay this practice. No one encourages lying and sneakiness.

I don't understand why anyone would do this. But it should be up to both people to be in control when it comes to the consequences. If you can talk before getting into bed, then talk about the issues before.

I didn't realize this survey existed, and I am embarrassed for the gals that said they'd get pregnant "regardless of their partners wishes". That's just stupid!

Female feminists aren't going to do much about this. Science needs to develop a pill/patch/lozenge for men or men need to use a condom for a longer time, until they get to know whether the woman is one of these types. The trouble is, a woman might not even know she's one of these types, or she might turn into one.

Im not a feminist but i just wanted to say that I personally have been pressured to have unprotected sex because the guy 'didnt like condoms because the sex doesn't feel as good'. I've had experiences with this much more than the other way round. Scottish

The problem lies in the socialization of the women who play these games. I doubt they are being reared by feminist parents. Which is why it does not occur to feminists that so many women actually behave this way.

ETA: To Theodore H I would say: Any PERSON who leaves the responsibility for birth control up to their partner is a fool.
Each person is responsible for his or her own choices.

i'm sure you know by now, anyone could find a poll to support any belief they had. i'm sure i could find a poll that proves some women prefer dolphins to men if i looked hard enough. it's all a lot of rubbish. no one i know has ever, ever tricked a man into fatherhood. unfortunately, i have known plenty of men who pressured their girlfriend to have sex without a condom, though.

women downplay the severity of this problem because, frankly, there are evil people in the world that do evil things. plenty of men have poked holes in condoms, etc, just as a few women may have pretended to take birth control. others have purposefully given their girlfriends std's, etc. we are not going to change all the laws because a few women trick men. this is not a common problem. what is a common problem is both men and women refusing to take responsibility for their choices. those choices include having unprotected sex.

We don't pretend this problem doesn't exist — we certainly don't condone the actions of these women. The problem is not downplaying the severity, but putting a stop to it. This 42% of women needs to learn that trying to trap a man into marriage won't have good consequences of any sort.

It must be embarrassment. I know at least 2 females who have done this to their partners. It is very common. Women who do this are horrible pieces of trash. In this day and age, a man needs to make sure he knows what kind of woman he is involved with before he has sex with her.
