Greatest Common factor means the largest number that can go into both numbers.

1. 8 and 12 = 4 because 4 can go into each and no larger number can go into both
2. 4 and 6 = 2
3. 10 and 15= 5 ...5 goes into 10 2times and 15 3 times, there is no larger number that goes into both
4.6 and 18 = 6 .....6 goes into 6 once and 18 three times

Write down all factors for each one:
1] 8 and 12 =
2 x 2 x 2 and 2 x 2 x 3, so the highest they have in common is 2 x 2, or 4.
2] 4 and 6 =
2 x 2 and 2 x 3, so highest common is 2.
3] 10 and 15 =
2 x 5 and 3 x 5, so highest common is 5.
4] 6 and 18 =
2 x 3 and 2 x 3 x 3, so highest common is 2 x 3, or 6!

GCF is the highest number [factor] that both numbers can be multiplied by.

for example
1) A factor of both 8 & 12 is 4.
8 can be divided by 4. and So can 12.

2) A factor of 6 & 4 is 2.

3) A factor for 10 and 15 is 5.

and so on..

Hope I helped!

this is the way i do it

i take the first number and ask myself, "What goes into this number?"

so i take it and think, does 1 go into 8? yes, 1x8=8

so i write

8(1(leave some space here) 8)

then i think 2 goes into 8 4 times. so 2x4=8

8(1,2,4,8)

3 does not go into 8 evenly , so i skip that number
I already have 4
5 does not go into 8 evenly
6 does not go into 8 evenly
neither does 7
and i already have 8

so the factors of 8 are 1,2,4,and 8

i do the same thing with 12

12(1, 12)
12(1,2, 6,12)
12(1,2,3,4,6,12)

now since 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 do not go into 12 evenly, i leave out those numbers. the factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6,and 12.

I take my factors of 8 and my factors of 12 and compare them to eachother

8(1,2,4,8)
12(1,2,3,4,6)

i look at the numbers and i pick the greatest one that they both have.

the greatest common factor of 8 and 12 is 4.
