I'm writing a book where the main setting is Hell. I don't like the stereo-type where it's about fire, ashes, demon slaves and a red guy with horns and pitchfork. Would it be plagiarizing if I changed the story to what I believe Hell looks like?

Plagiarizing? Not from what you wrote in your question.
You're not "stealing" from anyone - you wrote that you are going to describe what YOU think Hell looks like.

Plagiarizing"

"Lets start with a definition:

Plagiarize \'pla-je-,riz also j - -\ vb -rized; -riz·ing vt [plagiary] : to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (a created production) without crediting the source vi: to commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source - pla·gia·riz·er n
FROM: Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary 9th ed, (Springfield, Ma: Merriam 1981, p. 870)."

I'll bet it'll be a "hell" of a story.

Plagiarizing means stealing someone's words or ideas and claiming them as your own. If you write about what your idea of hell is, then it is your own. There are all kinds of hell. Each person has their own idea of what hell would be to them. By, the way, there is nothing in the Bible about red guys with pitchforks. But, you probably already knew that.

Only if it similar to something you've read in the past. Lots of authors get inspiration from other authors, but that doesn't automatically mean plagiarism.

Make it your own idea and you'll be fine.

Plagiarizing is coping someone elses words and claiming them for your own.

I think its great to come up with a fresh idea and expond on it in a story or book... go for it.

If your version of hell is based on something that you've seen or read in the past then yes. If it's something of your own design, then no.

If the ideas that you have are totally original, then no, it wouldn't be but, if you use images from other sources, the Bible, other novels that you have read, then credit your sources properly and you won't get into trouble. Good Luck!

Plagiarism is taken someone else's idea without permission.

It wouldn't be considered plagiarizing if it is your own idea.
