Well, I've seen quite a few, having lived in Montana.

The first one I saw was up in a tree along a hiking path. We were hiking with our three kids. We always hiked with a canister of bear spray but he was trying to avoid us so we just kept walking.

Really, as long as it's a black bear;avoidance and just walking away is best-2nd is just yelling ,"scat" "get!" and they usually mosey away or scurry up a tree. Black bear don't respond to pepper spray quite as well as grizzly bear do.

For grizzly bears, pepper spray (the bear kind) works better and faster than even a firearm does.

Bears of all kind hate dogs. The only natural predator of a bear is the wolf so they stay far away (from larger aggressive dogs-not the snack size kind).

Our rescued pit bulls had the time of their lives chasing off bears when we lived in MT.

Depends how far away the bear was when I saw it, and what it was doing at the time. Did the bear see me too?

All of those would have a direct influence on my actions.

But the strongest impulse would be to grab the camera.

I was once confronted by a bear. The bear took a step to the left and I took a step to the left.

Then the bear took a step to the right so I took a step to the right.

Then the bear had a sh*t.

I said, "Bear, you've got me there - I did that when I first saw you."

Cry and probably stay still - they always say to stay still around a dangerous animal, otherwise it will just chase you. At least if you stand very still you have a chance that it might think you're an unusual looking tree and just walk away
