Very low self-esteem.

If they are a mature committed couple who will be together for the rest of their lives and who can make their children feel wanted and loved and raise them together to be good people, I don't have a problem with their decision not to marry. Why the don't marry is beyond me, other than an attitude that their relationship is above that, which doesn't make any sense either. Otherwise, women who get into bad relationships and continue to have children with jerks have low self-esteem and think the children will trap the man into staying with her and the children to provide for them. Some women just aren't fulfilled without a man in their lives, they settle for the jerks out of low self-esteem.

I think that some people feel that things are easier in having the relationship that they have and do not want to add more stress to it; there may be a mutual understanding about that type of situation.
The other things could be that they want to get married and their man does not want to, or they are living on the state and if they do not get married then they do not have to worry about paying for rent and get WIC and things like that.

Different reasons for different people probably. Maybe commitment issues, or he turned out to be something she didn't want after having a kid with him. Who knows? It's not a bad thing. Not to me anyways. I had two kids before I married my husband/their father. Just wasn't the right time for us and we both kinda thought that marriage is somewhat of a curse, because we knew so many couples that were fine before they got married and their relationship went all down hill after...LOL! Thank God we were wrong...hahaha! Anyways, there could be all kinds of reasons, just depends on the situation.

I have known women to do this because they want to keep the man, but he is unwilling to commit to a marriage. Others see no need to legalize the situation until support issues arise when he moves out or deserts her. I do not feel they realize how important it is for children to have as stable a home life as possible in order to reach their full potential in life, and this includes having both a mother and a father in the home, if possible.

Could be because: 1) he/she doesn't want to get married 2) both people think the marriage changes things.....and it does 3) easier to leave a relationship than it is to leave a marriage...some state laws really suck

Marriage is supposed to come before the 2 to 3 kids anyway right? So if you already started a family what's the paperwork for?

Children shouldnt be a reason to get married. Marriage is something that you do when you get married even then thats not a reason to get married.

As a Canadian, where many couples pick to cohabit, I would say it's because marriage is just filing the paperwork. It doesn't seriously change your quality of life and it doesn't really harm your kids (since genetics tie you to them anyway).

Now that we have iron clad paternity tests, marriage is only something you do when you reproduce, if you think it's a cool idea.

Maybe those people take marriage very seriously and do not want to get married just because they have kids together.
