Comedy is subjective, you can't quantify it. What's funny to one person is not always funny to another. There's good arguments that ANYTHING can be funny to at least someone if put into the right context.

The fact that violence upsets you to the point where even a ridiculous context isn't enough to make it funny for you is a personal feeling for you. But violence and comedy have a long history of connection. Just look at the three stooges, or alot of old Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, and Tom and Jerry Cartoons. On several occassions, characters will die, and you will see their spirits float out of their bodies with robes, a harp and wings. And you probably watched that when you were a kid and laughed. So death CAN be funny if put into a certain context. The context of Mars Attacks wasn't enough to make you laugh, but it worked for plenty of othe rpeople.

Well, here is more than one kind of comedy.
* To start Mars Attack! is a parody of the science fiction movies of the 1950's.
* Besides that, the genre of comedy that include " aliens blasting people into red and green skeletons" is called black humour.
Black humour is a sub-genre of comedy and satire where topics and events that are usually treated seriously — death, mass murder, suicide, domestic abuse, sickness, madness, fear, drug abuse, rape, war, terrorism etc. — are treated in a humorous or satirical manner. Synonyms include dark humor, morbid humour, gallows humour and off-color humour.

I agree with you, not all people laugh at black humour.

Well, if you're as much of a fan of the director Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands) as I am, you kind of appreciate it when he does something comedic (however bizarre it may be). Usually his films are quite dark and brooding, so the only real comedic value When Mars Attacks has is that it was directed by him.

Have you heard about his upcoming slasher/musical/comedy movie "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"? I can't wait to see it.

Because it is a spoof of actual alien invasion movies from the 50's and 60's. The aliens are dumb not scary even though they blow things up. They are more comical than threatening.

Cause it is. When the movie came out, the director said he had nothing else better to do.
