It handicaps them into complacence, takes away all incentive for them to work and improve themselves. Welfare is an occasionally needed program, but I think many in the US abuse it so they can slack off. What's sad is this just drags everyone down, most of all the recipients.

Sorry, tend not to agree. While there are people who do take advantage of the system and that isn't only welfare, some people will take advantage of most anything if you give them a chance, there are many who are on welfare because they have to be. Young mum still trying to go to school, parent coming out of an abusive relationship with no work skills, families whose main breadwinner has been laid off suddenly with no new job in sight. How about a family where mum or dad suddenly has a stroke or a heart attack? How about new families to the country, though I know here, it is very rare to see immigrants collecting welfare. How about some of the working poor whose minimum wage job just isn't paying the bills and welfare needs to supplament them? I am in Canada, but I know that there are various places in the States where the unemployment rate is so high that even those wanting jobs can't find one because there aren't really any to find. I do know that there are places like that here in Canada too. The majority of people don't want to live on welfare. No one truly wants to live in a slum, eat what amounts to crap rations day after day, shop at the Sally Ann on a regular basis and have their kids figure they are bad because Santa forgot them again this year. The majority are the one's we don't see or hear about. The one's that are on the system and working desperately to get out of it.
Don't be so hard and so cruel to a great many people you know nothing about. It could be you one day.
Karma will come back to bite you.

First off it's welfare not walfare. More white people are collecting than African Americans. Its also not that easy to get. TANF for mothers of young children under the age of 6 is only available for 5 years lifetime and then it cuts off. It does not increase if you have more than one child and is usually less than $300/month.There is nothing for those who have no children. All they can get is disability through social security if they are approved as unable to work. Everyone else has to work. Most of the free stuff has been gone for years.

You need to try a little international travel. Not Europe, they have welfare too. After you've seen a few thousand starving people you may feel differently and thank God you live in a country that takes care of it's poor.

Welfare was reformed in 1996 between Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich. Welfare can only be collected for 5 years and job training and tracking job applications is necessary to claim welfare checks. It cut welfare by 86% and is still working. Nobody talks about welfare anymore as a political issue except for corporate welfare that is.
