Hi Im getting ready to go Ireland for 2 weeks. Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to carry our ID, Passports, credit cards, etc. Im told I should get a waist pouch, bra stash, money belt, etc. Is it really that dangerous?

I bought a neck pouch for my passport the first time I went overseas, and I never used it. Then again, I was staying with a friend of my cousin, so I did not feel like leaving it in my room was a risk.

I would say that it would depend on where you are staying - if it is at a hotel, your room may have a safe, or you could ask the hotel to put your passport in their safe (if it is a reputable hotel). As far as credit cards, I just get a small purse that has a zipper closure (not a snap or tie closure) and a short strap so that it fits snugly under my arm, and just carry them in my purse. For a guy, I would get a front-pocket wallet and just keep them in there - my personal opinion is that if you go with a waist pouch or money belt, you look like a tourist and are therefore probably more of a mark.

Make sure that you make 2 copies of your passport - leave one at home with a friend or relative, and take one with you and keep it separate from your real passport - this will facilitate replacement if you do lose your real one. Also do the same with any traveler's checks. Write down your credit card numbers (and keep this separate, too), and call the credit card company to get the phone number in Ireland that you would call if you were to lose them.

Also, as soon as you get there, locate the closest US Embassy or Consulate so that you know where to go for the passport issue or if you should get into any kind of legal trouble.

The best way is to carry it using a purse. However, make sure you make photocopies of your id, passport ,and write down your credit card information especially numbers so that you can call if it ever gets stolen.

It's really not that dangerous and chances are slim that someone will steal your things, but the consequences of something happening to your passport or credit cards are much greater when you are abroad and not in your hometown.

I usually just have everything in my purse, keep it zipped up and always close to my body. But then I'm used to taking care of my belongings in big cities.

I vote for the neck pouch. Have known too many careful, intelligent people who set their bag down for a second or forgot a purse in a taxi till it had pulled away...and there went the passport! Do make copies of it and your I./D. and keep them in a separate place. Have a great trip.

Theres a pretty good item you could pick up. Its like a wallet on a necklace that you keep hidden on your clothes. Depending on where you go, and for how long its pretty nifty because everything of value is on you, and hidden. Not easily noticeable or take-able.
