It depends ( it doesn't matter whether you are close to the person , etc you are correcting as some people pointed out , no offense to anyone )

In other words are you correcting because you sincerely want to help them ( not just because you think that they would appreciate it ) or because you want to humiliate/insult them or show other people how ignorant/idiotic they are ?

Having that said no I don't think that correcting someone's grammar or English , in it's whole , is a bad thing , nor is it rude and elitist , but it varies according to the people's thoughts , intentions and goals

CORRECTED others SOMETIMES it is GOOD and NECESSARY but .....THE WAY or HOW and WHY we correct would be the factor of RUDENESS or ELITIST.

HOW and WHY we correct is depend on INTENTION and MOTIVE of correcting where all these are relate to what we had in our HEART....sincerity or egos.

Why it is GOOD and NECESSARY to correct? Because we need to ensure we really understand the QUESTION before we could answer them at the best of our knowledge.

Most of the time it is NOT NECESSARY to correct as we could UNDERSTAND the question VERY CLEARLY even though SPELLING and GRAMMAR is not right as far as ENGLISH is concern.

Why? Because we are not in ENGLISH COURSES or CLASSES. We all using ENGLISH is just for communication and should we could communicate EFFECTIVELY through SYMBOLS and NUMBERS then we don't need ENGLISH or OTHER language.

You must know the speaker well enough to correct it; otherwise, it can come across as pompous & arrogant.
I have to say misuse of english, bad grammar & spelling used to really piss me off because it can make people sound ignorant, even when they aren't at all, but compared to the voice of someone always correcting someone else & being a total killjoy, I'll take the double negatives & such anyday.

well for some it's a natural instinct, automatically if you hear something wrong sometimes you blurt out the right way.....
Which I think it is OK up to a certain point
But! My grandmother ALWAYS questions why our generation doesn't know how to use English correctly. She makes everyone around annoyed with her because anything And everything you say she WILL correct you!! So it makes us not want to even talk to grandma!! can you imagine not wanting to talk to your own grandma??
Well my response to grandma was well grandma do you know how to format an excel spreadsheet, could you set up your own website??

depends on the person...
I'll correct my daughter who is 17 months old as much as possible but I'm not gonna tell the asian lady that works here It's "Do you have THE file for Mr. Smith?" not "Do you have file fo Meesta Smeet?"
...that would just be rude...

I suppose it is rude, but I sure want to do it a lot! I am such a stickler for correct pronunciation and spelling that I probably get on people's nerves. One of my latest peeves is that sooo many people say "seen" instead of "saw". They say, "I seen him at the store." That just irks the crap out of me!! Thanks for letting me vent, my dear, have a great day!! :-)

How can someone know they`ve made an error unless it`s pointed out? They really should use the spell checker above the answer box.
