I am presently wiring a tavern. Best job in the world.

Over the past 39 years I have done most types of electrical work. And I enjoy it all. I also teach apprentices and journeymen in the classroom and on the job, and I enjoy that too. I was an electrical inspector for the county for a few years and enjoyed that too, but the money wasn't adequate.

My son-in-law is a master electrician and works for a small company. He is his own boss due to his knowledge. He doesn't want his won business because of the strife he'd have to go through. He makes $48.00 an hour plus mileage. He also works part time on his own for private people, his boss actually gets him that work for free. so, he makes about 9 K a month and as much as 10K a month, I was doing his banking for him. He's happy.
My Grandson is in Iraq and works as an Master electrician putting in electric for the Iraqi's he makes about the same and has to have a guard for his safety, has been under machine gun fire, had his quarters bombed, and, lost all his belongings. I told him and told him, he always says, Grampa these people need us. What can I say.

Matter of opinion really, but the best answer is NEW construction. A new building is the best thing to start out on.
With the right boss or foreman you can learn how to do everything from the outside meter and service entrance to the devices, (equipment, outlets, lights, etc.)

Commercial is probably the easiest, because there arent as many things to learn right away. You pipe and pull wire for the most part. I like bending pipe the most. It is an artform and fun to figure out new ways to get around obstacles.

The hardest thing to learn for most is how grounding and bonding work and get the total picture on why it is so important.

As far as everything in electrical, I believe you should learn how to install a panel first.

Industrial Maintenance. I am an electrician and this is the best job you can have. Troubleshooting is the best thing in the electrical trade. You have to use your head and your experience to troubleshoot. When you encounter a problem it may be very easy to solve or it may take a while to figure it out.

i been in the trade for almost 10 years i would say industrial its more involved and you learn alot more the just twisting wire nuts, lights and outlets...gets old quick. But if your just starting out I would start with house work to learn the basics, also most of your side work will be house work, you dont want to go in a house and work and not no what your getting into it will take u a lot longer to do the job going in blind. I would suggest do house work for a couple of years then work your way up to industrial. Thats only my opinion....good luck

Commercial. The jobs are bigger so they last longer. You are not normally confined to small places to work in.
