A "formal" teaching system probably goes back to Sumer, when writing was invented. There would be a need to teach clerks the methods to keep track of everything.

School has been around since the beginning of time. Other cavemen would teach others skills to survive. If you mean actual established school as it is today, I'd say around the Greek days.

When you study the great philosophers, you will note that Socrates, Aristotle and Plato all kept schools. Jesus was called "Teacher". So, thousands of years ago.
In the U.S., as soon as the "Pilgrims" could establish themselves, they set up a school.
So, probably ever since civilization has existed.
