Wondering because I want to be a chef and open up my own restaurant but I know that 90% of restaurants close. So is going to a 4 year university 1st better so that I can have a fall back plan?

Yes! Get a four- year Degree MOST definitely!!! Whatever you want it in Business may help you alot :) Culinary school is great but you're right you need a backup. What if you find out you don't like cooking anymore, what will you do?

Start at a culinary school and work for a living for a while. Maybe not owning your own restaurant yet but you'll be working. During this time go to a four year school and learn about management and such so you can open your own restuarant and now the business end of things. Good luck and remember with important decisions like this do as much research and get as much help from professionals as possible. Be careful because sometimes the schools are biased in order to get you to attend.

It would be impossible to say no to such a question.
Instead think of it this way, if things are not going the way you'd like, then you can use that degree to get a management position in a good restaurant. You can then use all the knowledge you've gained to better prepare you for running your own restaurant.
Good luck.
P.S. If you do work in a restaurant, you should keep your eyes open and always take notes about things such as what delivery companies they use, etc... Then you already have contact numbers you can use when you open your restaurant.

If you can afford it and are not on fire to start your culinary career right now ... sure, go to a 4 year college. It's a blast and you just might learn something relevant to your possible cooking career. You may even change your mind about what future course you decide on in life.

If you're bent on a culinary career, go to a 4 year school that offers a major in Hotel/Restaraunt Management. Cornell (an ivy league school) in Ithica, NY has one of the best programs in U.S.A.
