My desktop computer is in the kitchen and I try to use my laptop in the bedroom. In-between the kitchen and bedroom lies the laundry room and parts of the garage with lots of electric stuff! My laptop in the bedroom refuses to stay connected. Should I buy a new modem, and if so, what kind? My modem is connected to Verizon FIOS. Thanks.

Your problem is distance, penetration, and interference. All of these are contributing to the problem.

Wi Fi signal does not penetrate masonry, metal (ducts, mirrors, etc), high density building materials, etc. Wi Fi signals weaken with distance. Electronic interference from fluorscent lights, electric transformers, welders, motors, etc also fouls things up.

The problem is not Verizon or the modem. It is the Wi Fi itself. A different brand will NOT help.

Wired connections, properly run, will not have this problem. Shorter Wi Fi distances, not fouled by interference will help.

Perhaps you can move your existing Wireless Access Point to a different location. You may need a second Wireless Access Point wired to the existing router if this does not work. Perhaps you can run CAT5 properly to your room and use a wired connection. Any of these should help.

So much stuff can effect WiFi, it's really not that hard to say

It should be powerful enoug though, chances are something in your house is effecting the signal or it's been set up incorrectly
