Im refering to the average 'skyline'.

Reason 1 is bedrock. You need solid bedrock to make deep, stable foundations. You can't build a tall, heavy building on a foundation that's liable to compress, shift, erode or tilt.

They tried it in Pisa a few centuries ago and look what happened.

Reason 2 is politics. Some places won't grant you zoning or permits to build skyscrapers.

Reason 3 is economic. Some areas are recognized as white collar hotbeds so developers will build certain types of building there.

The Empire State Building was located unusually north when it was built and it's office space sold for pitiful rates for it's first few decades. Eventually the area around it developed and it's now an elite corporate headquarters for prestigious companies.

Space and land are ever increasingly valuable. Especially in the city.

Because it looks so much nicer does not take up space
