Yes, I think poverty and financial catastrophes lead to crime and good money management leads to pretty clean records.

Having excess money is more likely to cause somebody to enjoy the power and prestige of the money by spending it extravagantly on entertainment, houses, and investments that how successful they are. They would be more likely to embezzle because they would be more likely to be trusted. They might be prone to other crimes once their measures of success start failing, such as embezzling or fraud after trouble with the IRS, massive stock losses, or a pending foreclosure.

Poverty is more likely to cause theft of what the poor person wants but feels they cannot buy. It also is more likely to cause drug and alcohol use because of greater feelings of hopelessness.

Sometimes. In inner city areas poorer people can be envious of other people's possessions and this leads to theft and carjacking. Also poorer youths feel they have something to proove to the world. Just look at the ratio of disadvantaged kids with ASBO's to the upper class kids. There are hardly any.
Murder, rape and other violent crimes straddle the different classes as do drug related incidents.

Much more than having lots of money leads to crime.

Sure. If you're rich or well-to-do, why would you steal, rob, carjack, break and enter, etc. unless you had some sort of mental illness or ghastly drug habit.

People in poverty are desperate sometimes and desperation makes people do crazy things.

Not right at all, but it's one of the causes. That's what you asked.
