I think it's a good idea to give the person a thumbnail sketch of who you are. You tell them where you live, the things you like, your philosophy,,,things like that. Leave the physical out because if you want to make a friend, there are other things more important than how you look. If the person is only interested in how you look, they are too shallow--don't waste your time.

well you can both share the things you enjoy doing ,things you might have in common ,hobbies etc..
this way you can get to know the nice side of that person.
also, talking about what you most enjoy will keep you in a happy mood througout the conversation......

lol. something random. =)
Usually.. I start off with something like... "hey! what's up?"
Then we talk about our age.... where we're from,..... stuff like that.
After about the 3rd time, we talk about sports, and hobbies, embarassing moments, stuff like that.

When I did it it was mainly casual conversation--likes and dislikes, career, family etc. Nothing heavy.
