according to this --yes,
I always noticed that Canadians always seem to speak in disparaging terms about "Noofies"..in a way they would never speak about an ethnic group without being regarded as extremely racist.

they only joined Canada in 1949 which means that they must have a lot of history as not being part of Canada-- also many seem to have a distinctly Irish-sounding accent. In Several respects it makes them both distinctive and victimized.
