In Prophecies, you start in Pre-searing Ascalon. This is a time before the Charr destroyed Ascalon. After you complete that section of the game, you are brought forward in time to after the searing. You cannot go back. The game lets you travel distances but not backward in time.

Are you referring to Pre-Searing? If so, you cannot return with that character. The Charr attacked Ascalon and destroyed it. It is now 2 years laters in the story and you are now in the ruins of Ascalon.
Pre-Searing is a nice little tutorial area. Some folks really like it and keep a character there permamently trying to level them up with the low level enemies and quests around there. However it really was only meant to be a tutorial area. There is a much bigger world out there for you to explore now.
