I hope that we can all agree that our elected representives are not voting the way the majority of the people that voted for them want them to!
The many polls prove this.
Wouldn't it be nice if we voted when an important issue came up? Instead of letting these bought off politicians make our laws for us! Corporations would no longer run the counrty!
This would really shuffle things up for awhile, but big money would eventually get used to it.
This would truly be the will of the people!
Example: Abortion
NAFTA
Patriot Act
Immigration
Iraq war
Death Penelty
Ect.
This would be a way of getting back to a real democracy!
I understand that some people won't want to make their own decisions and are willing to let others do it for them!
That' fine!!!
I love this country and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but there are always ways to make it better!

Sounds like a great idea!
There was a movement prior to US entry into World War 2 for a referendum on entry into the war. It obviously never happened, but had attracted significant support.
It would be hard to get official support for such an idea from either of the two major parties. It would have to be the demand of a broad based social movement, such as the anti-war movement.

That is a great idea! Maybe most of the people will actually read the bills we are voting on. But many of the issues you listed are Constitutional issues. If you are talking about voting on a state level then that is fine as long as it does not conflict with the Constitution.

The Constitution and the Supreme Court still control federal laws. But there is no reason why we cannot vote on proposed bills that have been finalized and do not conflict with our Constitutional Rights or Civil Rights.

that would be majority rule, and unfortunately a lynch mob is a worst case example of majority rule,

this is the reason why we have elected representatives, and the primary reason why the founding fathers created America as a republic and not a democracy, in the majority rule the major cities on the east and west coast would be making all policy that affects the states in the middle of America,

the little guy has to have a voice fighting for him, and though yes there is corruption giving too much power to special interests and campaign contributes, its still better that the alternative,

We wouldn't be "getting back to a real democracy" because we are not and never have been a Democracy. We are a Republic.
Rather than ignorantly vote without studying the issues...we hire like-minded representatives to study and carefully consider the issues, and vote as we would if we spent all our time on the issues instead of our own jobs.
If our representatives do not adequately represent our views...we replace them with representatives who will
