Absolutism is a form of monarchy where the power is concentrated in the monarch to such a degree, the monarch literally personifies the State. All governmental bodies are completely subordinate to the monarch, and the monarch himself (or herself) is not bound by any laws in dealing with his or her own subjects.

In the historical sense, absolutism described a form of monarchial power. A monarch had absolute rule over his/her nation and answered to no one but God.

I saw a really impressive documentary on History International a few nights ago about Russian royal history. A classic example of absolute rule would be Peter the Great. He consolidated his power while building up a Russian navy (modeling it after Britain's navy) and dragging his countrymen kicking and screaming out of the Middle Ages...literally. Everyone had to dress like the rest of Europe (breeches, long socks, buckled shoes, etc) and he instituted a NO BEARD policy. The Boyars did not take kindly to this and were hesitant to change their old ways.

However, he saw himself as a normal, everyday guy and would venture out into society dressed as such (some might spot him because of his height).

I am giving you a link to a Wikipedia article that might help you. Also do a Wiki search on "absolutism" and it will give you a few other definitions other than the European example I just gave you.
