I would say that it would restirict you too much when riding, that the risk of falling is greater. As long as you know how to fall correctly (ie: dont brace yourself with your arms, try to tuck yourself into your body), then that will protect you more from a fall than a body protector. I mean afterall, they are just semi-squishy material, it could possibly make a fall worse. - Granted I've never worn one, or seen one in person...so they might be fine.

I think an event vest might be a good idea if you're worried but they definatley dont prevent you from falling off. Just an outter protectant - they definatley help during a fall for broken ribs and inner damage (dependant on the severity of the fall of course) but they definatley help. Be careful though if you plan to compete, vests arent allowed in some divisions (hunters inparticular).
Hopefully you wont have a terrible fall again, but they do say you're not a TRUE rider until youve fallen a good number of times!
Happy Riding! : 0)

It's too much bother and too much money for me at the moment. If I was going to be jumping five foot tall five foot spread fences I would certainly wear one, but at the moment it's not worth it. I'll take the bruises and the beating from falling off rather than wear something uncomfortable. I don't like tight things across my chest and upper body, ever at all, so it would be insanely uncomfortable for me.

Equestrian college insists on them - no body protector = no jumping.
My daughter never used to wear one at home - one time she did the horse fell over in the field and trod on her chest ( as he was getting up). She didn't even have a bruise. Now she always wears it if she's riding in the fields or jumping.

howdy! i say if your going to be doing some serious jumping, definataly were one. better a couple bad bruises than broken ribs. i dont feel they restrick me with right balance. i recomend getting one that is your size though and comfortable. :) i wore one once on a hunt that was a wee to small but it was enofe to alter my balance almost every fence and really irritated the horse i was on he was a snot though. pikyest horse i've ridden. many horses jump diferently cuz of there size etc. so you might wanna wear one over a couple with your horse before you get a certian one.

If your body protector fits you correctly, it will not interfere with your position at all. I have one which I've used for cross country in eventing (because it's required). It never bothered me. When my son starts jumping, I will probably make him wear one.

I ride eventing so i wear a body protector when doing cross country and i would be dead without it they dont hinder the jumping position at all and they keep you safe and well protected.

I no longer ride - not because I don't want to - but because after a fractured skull, missing teeth, broken back, and internal injuries, I can't anymore.
Why? Because when I was coming along - there WAS no body-protection. It hadn't been developed.
Indeed the doctors are surprised that I'm able to walk - but trust me - it's the meds - and I take a lot of meds. And don't get me started on cold, wet days...
Do you get my drift?
God bless Kydex!

If professtional 3-day eventers are wearing them, they must not restrict body movement. Wear them, they do help.
