I was just wondering, since my school is charging $1 for a temporary ID (valid for that day only) AND for the first offense you get lunch detention; second a referral, etc. And for a NEW ID it is 5 dollars.
Isnt there some law about it being unlawful for the school to charge students for something that they require you to have?

also, considering that the school does charge "registration fees" at "facts and fees", and they charge for parking, and lockers, it seems like they are taking advantage of the students.

Well, my son has to pay for his if he loses it. I think they tell you that when you first get it. Don't loose it.

Since you know the consequences for each offense, it is likely in the student handbook that you read and signed as having read during high school orientation.
The PENALTY not only helps cover the cost of the materials, but it is an attempt to make an impact on you in an effort to make you modify your own behavior in relation to your ID. And since you are in here complaining......it seems to have had an impact.
And AMEN to Hoptoad. Wish the word "entitlement" were banned! Things would be a lot less painful at tax time.

I know of no law that specifically prevents schools for charging for required items. Regardless, if such a law existed, it would not cover replacement required items. As an example, many schools issue students an ID card for free. They charge for replacements if the card is lost. This makes perfect sense and helps to teach responsibility (does not cost you anything if you are responsible and don't lose your card)

The school has to pay for the materials for the ID. Whats the problem with paying $1 for the ID? Get used to it, every institution has mandatory crap that you have to pay for. College is even worse, books are crazy expensive as well as laptops, studying abroad etc. Get the word entitlement out of your head. No one is entitled to anything.

Hmm - and the first one they issued you cost how much?
Was it free? See they didn't charge you for an item they "required you to have" they gave it to you - you just failed to have it with you and had to pay a fee for a temporary one or $5 if you lost it.
Take better care of your things - and stop whining. Good grief what a bunch of babies the upcoming generation is!

Go to your library and get on findlaw (instead of myspace) and check your state's laws. If you can find a law that prevents them from doing this, you will be the hero of your school. If you cannot, I am sure you will learn some interesting things along the way.
Good luck.

It's called RESPONSIBILITY.
If you are required to have it and you don't bring it, you pay. Just like in the adult world.

Of course not.
They require you to have pencils and shoes, too.
