A) Hoffman is the MLB all-time saves leader. I'd take my chances with him, too.
B) That said, Hoffman has shown a history of not stepping up for the big moment. If you put him in Mariano Riviera's 10 biggest Yankees' playoff moments during his career, I think the Yanks wouldn't have as many titles today as they've won since 1996.
Hoffman is a GREAT reliever...but his stats have come mostly against the Pirates on a Tuesday night, not on a big stage.

Well, it made sense at the time since Hoffman is their closer, and he is the all time saves leader. But Bud Black should have had a contingency plan and should have pulled Hoffman as soon as he started struggling. He didn't, they lost. Tough Luck. Enjoy your Cy Young on vacation Peavy...haha.

Consider the bullpen. Hoffman had about a 2.98 ERA with 42 saves. They'd already used Bell. What's your alternative?

I feel the same way about Mariano Rivera sometimes.....
As a Yankee fan, I think to myself, "How much longer can he do this?"
Trevor Hoffman is still one of the best.....and any manager would have had him in there in that situation.

Hoffman based on past experience has been good. Monday night was not one of those nights.

He must suck seeing as he is the all-time Major League save record holder...yeah the Padres manager must be crazy...are you out of your mind??? Most teams in the majors would love to have him as their closer...what are you smoking?

i agree, Hoffman blew the save against the brewers that should have been a sign that this guy sucks in crucial situations...even if he is the all time leader in saves he still cant perform in big games...(all-star game...)
