Or stay away from talking about it unless they bring up the subject?

Pretend there's nothing different about him or her. You don't know what happened and unless they want to talk about it, you have no right to ask.

No. Most of the people I know that are in that condition don't want anyone to bring up the painful memories of losing a limb. Some connect it to losing friends, or outright pain and misery, so it is best not to ask about it. It is improper, if not plain rude, to just stare at the injured part that is left too. If they start talking about it, then it is OK for the subject to run its course. Otherwise talk about anything else.

I'd wait until they brought the subject up.
I've been working with a guy for over 2 years who only has 1 leg and I have no clue as to how or when he lost it!

It would depend on the personality of the person after we had talked a bit. I know people that have lost limbs and most say they would rather a person ask than make assumptions or set and stare at them, they have no problem telling what happened.

I don't think there is anything wrong with asking, but it wouldn't be the first thing I asked. If you had a conversation, and it was going well, I would ask, but I would play it by air. See how the conversation goes first. You'll be able to tell if it's a sore subject or not.

Absolutely not! Have you any idea how many times a person in that predicament hears that question? So much they want to scream. If they bring it up, thats a different story, otherwise thats just rude. Its like asking an obese man "how did you get so fat?"

Probably not, but I think that It would depend on the situation!! Because although I am not shy and having conversations like that in public places may make that person uneasy!! Probably sick of answering the same question all the time!!

That would entirely depend on the circumstances and the type of interaction we had. I wouldn't ask outright I don't suppose but if we had been chatting for a while and it seemed appropriate I might.

No. I'd be curious, but I'd be too polite to ask them or bring up the subject.

No, unless it was someone I knew and they had both arms the last time I saw them.
