Sixteen is a very important birthday...especially for girls. Since you say you're close...and since I don't know your budget, I'd suggest getting something to commemorate her 16th birthday. In other words, get something that represents a shared memory you two have or something that you two have always talked about doing. It could be a symbolic thing...like a bracelet charm, a concert t-shirt, even a coffee mug with her favorite saying on it. Something personal and something that's not "consumable." Why, you ask...because years from now she will look at it and remember your friendship and a very special birthday.
An example...my son has a female friend and for her sixteenth birthday her parents got her a classic Corvette...so, for her birthday he got her a little die-cast version of the car and gave it to her along with a Corvette key chain. She LOVED it.
Good Luck!

You might get a gift that complements what her uncle is giving her. For example, if he's giving her a DVD player, get her a DVD of a movie she might like. If he's getting her a dress, get her a pin or necklace.
It's also possible that she might want two of that thing!

gift card is always an easy option. Offer her a day of fun, take her to get her nails done and then take her to a movie and maybe lunch.
