I have a painted turtle and I would like to clean her shell but I'm afraid I might damage it. What are the supplies you need and the correct way to effectively clean her shell? It doesn't look like it's rotting, just mabye some leftover food that somehow got on her shell. I afraid to take a toothbrush to it because i'm afraid it will hurt her...PLEASE HELP!

I too would recommend a soft toothbrush. I did mine this past week although it was a feat trying to do it cos Linford decided he wanted to take a walk whilst I was doing it! Not sure if it was the sensation of the brush on his shell or whether he thought 'I'm freeeeee'

Yep a soft bristled toothbrush always works some warm running water too! 78F of course. Just softly scrub the top of her shell with a soft bristled brush in circles and she wont feel a thing. You might want to be careful though. My turtle hates being messed with for long periods of time so make it quick or watch your fingers! Bites hurt!

Are you sure thats a stinkpot? I used to have one and it grew very slowly but it was about the size of a plum at a year and a half. Either way, I wouldnt clean its shell unless it really needed it. If so, use a cotton ball, qtip, or wipe it gently with a wet paper towel.

A toothbrush will not hurt her shell.I have even brushed my box turtles shells with a tiny drop of baby bath and warm water.Of course I rinse very well.It has never done them any harm.

Don't worry-get a soft-bristled baby toothbrush and that should be safe! Their shells are their protection so they are hard.
