I know three personally.

My good friend (who actually goes by her middle name) is named Frances. However, her mother and her grandmother are also named Frances. She started going by her middle name as a child in order to keep everyone straight! Otherwise, her grandmother is just Fran and her mother is Frannie Jo in the family, and Fran at work.

I think Frances is a beautiful traditional name with lots of possibilities. I would suggest that if you go with Frances, you pick a middle name that she can use in the case she doesn't really like going by Frances formally.
