does anybody know anything about a belt tensioner on a 1998 mercedes ML 320 that is failing

The tensioner must be replaced as a unit as there is a flat coil spring wound up inside and bushings or bearings that the pulley rides on. Try autopartswarehouse.com for a replacement. There's no shipping charges on items under $50.00 and you duck the sales tax.

It's best to get it replaced before you toss the serpentine belt which places you dead in the water with no water pump, power steering, alternator and air conditioner.

In a pinch any auto parts store can get one for you- NAPA, Car-quest, Advance Auto, Auto Zone etc.

yes they are designed to keep your belts adjusted properly,
yours is warn out and needs to be replaced.they are not very hard to change yourself or you can try a mechanics shop for the labor
