I think we all wish we had electricity in our barns. We change the water three times a day when its really cold. Our barn typically stays about 10 degrees warmer than the outside air.

We also run a very very long extension cord out for various things. So you might be able to do that and use electric tape to give you a few more degrees of freeze protection.

What kind of animals do you have? I know there are heated water bowls for dogs and such (I have one) ....you could run an extension cord from the house (I'm also doing that). If you're talking big animals like horses....I would venture to bet they have something similiar. Just run an extension cord and use electrical tape where they connect to help keep any moisture out.

You slog water buckets from the house to the barn a few times daily like they did in the olden days!!!!!!

You'll just have to knock the ice out of the water pans/buckets a couple of times a day and refill them with fresh water.
