Four years of college, four years of medical school, and five years of internship/residency = thirteen years beyond high school. During college, you can take on all kinds of jobs. In medical school, it is almost impossible to hold down any kind of a job (that's why medical students have big loans). A residency IS a job (you are working full-time as a medical resident, which is an entry-level job, even though it is still essential training, for a physician).
