in my family, $50 was the limit for birthdays.... i dont think $70 - $100 is too much if you can afford it.

I usually spent about $100 to $ 150 on party supplies and an additional $ 100 on the present(s). With special occasions like when my son turned 16 this summer we spent more. I think your price range is very reasonable. I've got three kids and it seems like they have a birthday every time I turn around. lol It can get expensive especially as they get older.
My oldest is turning 19 this Friday!!! Getting out the credit card as we speak LOL

I say to my 7 and 6 year old: "Here we are in Toys R Us". My budget is 50 or 70 dollars".
Only if, that is, they have been good in school!! That's how I make the judgment.

No, that's not too bad. I have this system, when someone in my family has a birthday, I get MYSELF a present for their birthday so, I spend A LOT!!!

BigM,
depend on who you ask. If you ask the child the answer may likely be "you had to pay for this stuff?" or "is that all you spent on me?". Ask the parent and you may hear "I worked over time with a broken down car to get you this stuff - and yes, I had to pay for it" or "I spent my haircut money for the next 5 months so you could have your ...(you fill in the blanks)."
Have a good evening.
