I love the Mariners and bleed Mariner blue (teal?). Johnson and Griffey are both well beyond their prime and approaching obsolecence if not already there. That isn't to say Seattle won't get them, just that they shouldn't. They have a proclivity for going after players they shouldn't.

Mike Cameron is a C+, B- player at best. Take him if he's a bargain on the block, but otherwise pass.

A Rod is definitely worth pursuing, but he's way out of the Mariners' price range.

The M's are doing alright. The offense was okay if inconsistent and the bullpen was solid until fatigue took over late in the year. The M's should be focusing on Starting Pitching for the foreseeable future.

Johnson - no. Arizona's on the hook for his 2008 salary, and while I do think he'll come back and grind his way to 300 wins, he just doesn't have much left. He'll try for 2009 only if he still hasn't hit his milestone, but otherwise, the thought here is that he's more than ready to ride off into the sunset.

Griffey - no. He's not totally washed up yet, but he's got one of the worst health histories in the game today. He's fast approaching "full time DH" status, he's expensive, and he pushed the door open out of Seattle himself.

Cameron - no. Older, on the downslope, better options are available.

ARod - well, sure, if the price is right, which in Seattle it will not be. Probably has another one or two MVP seasons in him in addition to a projected long, slow, graceful fade to retirement. This man helps any team, but the Mariners aren't going to be a player when he opts out this winter.

None of the above. Johnson and Griffey are too expensive for what you would get toward the end of their careers, They can't afford A-Rod, and Cameron is unpredictable. The Mariners are on the right track without any of the above.
