My 8th grader is embarking down this frightful journey. Can I please get some ideas for his thesis statement, we can take it from there but I need as many ideas as I can get on what to experiment on.

I may be prejudiced but robotics is a hot item these days. And machine vision is a core topic in robotics development. There is a program called 'roborealm' that is free to download. you could do a project on object recognition that uses a camera with video output (do you already have a camcorder?), roborealm and a PC (which you apparently already have) at a low cost to you.
