I'm throwing a baby shower for my brother and his wife. It's a couples shower. I'm buying some lotions and stuff for the mom-to-be from burts bees baby line, since I know she'd like it. But I would like to get my brother something too, that he will appreciate. I don't want it to be something really expensive because we are already spending a lot on the shower. Does anyone have any suggestions?
And just some additional info: They are not registering anywhere so I can't just pick something off their list. And they've asked that no one buy them blankets, clothes, or soft toys, etc. (Long story) They also want to pick out their own crib, carseat, moniters, etc etc. So I'm looking for something kind of unique that would be more appreciated by dad than mom.
Thanks in advance! :)

To answer a few questions: They are not going to find out the sex of the baby and it is their first. :)

My husband (a new dad) received the book Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads by Gary Greenburg. It's a useful and humorous book. He's enjoyed reading it, so I would recommend it or a similar daddy guidebook.
Another suggestion, a children's book (or books) that your brother enjoyed. That way, he can read it to the new baby.

Disposable cameras they can keep in diaper bags, so they never miss a cute moment getting the digital. A nice picture frame of Daddy's Lil Girl, or Daddy's Lil Fishing Buddy. A gift certificate to his favorite restaraunt, and you offer to keep the baby. Savings Bond, or a really nice piggy bank with a little starting cash. Fishing pole and tackle.
Is this a first child, and is the baby male or female?

i like the belief of the couples bathe yet i in my view in all probability does not attend if it replaced into on 4th of July weekend. that's a extensive kinfolk weekend. i understand that I even have important plans each year for the 4th as do maximum of my pals. however the couple bathe is a reliable theory if your husband is comfortable with it, your Dad in all probability is basically somewhat old shaped in his way of thinking that he can no longer see previous the classic bathe and that there are the right thank you to make it exciting for each man or woman.

Do they know if they are having a boy or girl? You could always buy something that your brother could use when the baby grows older during those father/son or father/daughter moments. (i.e. baseball bat/glove, fishing pole, I'm at a loss for girly things at the moment but you get the picture)
Try to think of something your brother enjoyed as a kid and would like to pass on to their child. Either a hobby or particular item and focus on that. Try to focus on something he could use to interact with the child. Help him pass on his love for something on to his child.

We went out and got a pair of goggles, some extra long tongs, a pair long rubber gloves and a plastic apron nose plugs, dipper rash and put it all in a paper bag label ER kit. They got a big kick out of it. All of it can be used at one time or another. A bunch of his Marine buddies came ot it also, besides I'm a retired Marine.

Always a great gift: a kit that makes stepping-stones...the idea is for Dad to put baby's footprints/handprints (maybe with Dad's next to them) and maybe some things that mean something to the family (seashells for instance)...it makes a nice keepsake...Dad gets to make it with baby and it looks great in a garden....and it's something he'll treasure as his little one grows up...

maybe a manly diaper bag... they have some now that are more like a back pack type, messenger style... you could put some his favorite things in there to keep him busy while mom is in labor... magazines, chewing gum, crossword puzzles, change for the vending machine... like an essentials birth kit, for him.
