I cut the grass on my lawn on saturday, but today i noticed a large amount of what look like mushrooms have sprung up since then, all over the lawn! They are brown and have no markings. Are these mushrooms or toadstools? Also, how did they grow so quick? Like I said I only cut the grass saturday and there was no sign of them then.

Obviously they are a fungi of some kind, and like most fungi they do grow overnight, and then start maturing until they release their spores. It is the right time of year for the magic mushrooms to make themselves evident, but I wouldn't advocate you using them, even if your local junkie identifies them as such. If you walk on them all you'll be doing is transferring the spores across the rest of the lawn, and that seems inevitable if they've sprung up all over your lawn already, best thing is to try picking them up and binning them before the spores ripen and then feeding your lawn with a fall feed and fungicide. If you scarify your lawn, rake regularly and feed again in the spring with a weed and feed you stand a chance of getting rid of them.

Mushrooms can literally grow overnight. They won't be edible though I'll bet. And cutting them with the mower probably spread the spores around. Local garden centre should be able to advise you on getting rid of them, which is a good idea if you have children who play out!

Scientists make no differentiation between mushrooms and toadstools and refer to them merely as fruiting bodies. They are like icebergs, 90% is underground and nearly impossible to get rid of. The good news is it's a sign of healthy well watered soil. If you don't like them you can kick'm, pick'm or mow'm, and they won't be back until next year. RScott
