because of how others perceive you or because you are offended?

Again, if you are Black and you do not support BET, is it due to how others are perceiving us, as a race, or because you are offended by their TV shows, music videos, etc. and feel they do not represent Black?

Reasons:
1. I am not in support of BET because it gives Blacks a bad image.

2. I am not in support of BET because it offends me nor does it represent me.

3. Other.

Please explain if you will. I'm asking because I want to see which is more important to you. Just curious...

I DON'T SUPPORT BET BUT I DO WATCH *SOME* OF THE T.V. SHOWS ON BET LIKE GIRLFRIENDS AND COMICVIEW AND THE WAYANS BROTHERS, BUT NOW THAT MUSIC CRAP AND OTHER STUFF. I DON'T REALLY CARE TO WATCH BET BECAUSE IT'S JUST PLAN IGNORANT. IT DOESN'T OFFEND ME MUCH BECAUSE I KNOW FOR FACT THAT NONE OF THAT STUFF REPRESENTS ME OR WHO I AM. AT POINTS IT CAN GIVE BLACKS A BAD IMAGE, BUT TO ME ALL IN ALL, IF YOU BELIEVE AND ACCEPT WHAT YOU SEE ON T.V. ABOUT BLACKS AS A CULTURE THAN THEY ARE JUST DAMN IGNORANT.

TRUTHFULLY BET ISN'T INTERESTING AT ALL, THAT'S WHY TRULY I DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO IT. I WATCH VH1 BEFORE I DO THAT.

I have my own lif,e my own issues, and my own friends

Same reason why i did not support OJ

did you get your OJ prize throguh the door for thinknig he was innocent

BET makes millions upon millions of dollars every year. Very little reason to feel sorry for them, ok you may emphasize if you are an entertainer yourself

but truly is it going to make a shred of difference to your life,

i'd rather give a bozo five bucks

then give gifts to the rich

Problem is, other blakc people always have to be seen as defending the race at every given opportunity

all part of an evil game, BET can support itself, it has been, and is a lot richer than any of us blogging on this thing, so why should we feel guilty or responsible becuase as black people we haven't given to the black cause

how about a black philosophy channel

or a black science channel

where we discover the links between the japanese and nigerian language of which ther are over 10,000 words spelt almost exaclty the same and have exactly the same meaning?

why are we always being thrusted down the entertainment route

almost like saying, as a woman you are genetically retarded unless you can shake your bottom like a rattlesnake?

stuff like that just makes us forget the real issue

being nice
working hard
loving the lord and doing what he expects

and realsiing that we all came from just two people, if you gave those european americans, the only americans who seem to be the ones with out a prefix to their name unlike the afro or even the native americans (the only true americans in my opnion, so true that they had to call them native to make them sound less american) anyway if you gave then a genetic genealogy test, you will find they are from all over the place, there is only one race.

There are however many other cultures.

Music is an expression of a culture

the culture is not governed by the music

this is why i don't dress like some gangster wearing jeans with no belts which would otherwise look better on a family of 4

it's also why i don't infect my english with words such as dis and dat and biyotch which were only created to make black people look stupid.

The problem is people think this is their identity, when you try to remove them from these latter day customs, they think you don't know what it means to be black

i see, so speaking english and not slang is a property black people are incapable of doing?

who told you this, your teacher or snoop dog....

sory fopr the rant

much love
god bless

peace

I am not in support of BET, because I believe it is a contributing factor in demoralizing, desensitizing, disrespecting, and damaging the minds of our youth. No matter what the race is but especially our young black youth of today.
Through the tasteless images that can be seen on most of the shows aired by all of Viacom stations (BET, MTV, MTV2, VH1, CBS), they are providing false importance in life. It's not about the "bling bling", fast cars, or who has the biggest booty.
It's about saving our young daughters from thinking they need to appeal to a man by showing what they have on their backside, and not what's in their head. Teaching our youth to aspire to be a CEO of their own company, and not the next fake commercial HIP HOP Star, or the next Video Vixen getting passed around.

I guess you could say I have a personal interest in this subject because I'm a single mother of a 12 year girl. It's a struggle everyday to save her from becoming a victim of that fake life. It defiantly starts at home; however it's time for these artist to stand up and take responsibility too. Especially when they let B^tch and ho come out their mouths like it's nothing.

I do not support BET becuase its just not entertaining. BET doesn't give black people a bad image, but it does give hip-hop a bad image. But I do occassionally watch some of there other programming. I have a very close freind who is a producer for BET. Even the Black people that work for BET loose sleep at night.

2. I am not in support of BET because it does NOT represent me.

Sorry I'm not a long haired r&b type diva in heels with bling and beyonce style, sorry I'm not from New York and puerto rican and all full of neck twistin' attitude. Sorry but NO, that does not rep who I am.

And sorry that I hate to watch a 20 minutes of commercials, while I get just 10 minutes of videos in a 1/2 hour segment.

P.S. Did anyone else know that MTV bought out BET?? That's most likely why they both suck at the same levels right now.

Does MTV represent the white culture? God, I hope not. BET is one channel. Yes, BET is there to MAKE A PROFIT. All TV channels are. All TV channels are sell outs to what will make them more money. Even the history channel makes documentaries about popular topics and issues (9/11, Sex, etc). All news channels are another example (Anna Nicole Smith, anyone?). The black culture is a part of America, and shines through on many different channels, on TV or off.

I don't support BET because of # 1. I don't think the network is helping black Americans to build a positive image, it is just making the problem worse with it's constant stereotypes and generalization of black Americans. It has a lack of positive images, role models and and the shows/programs aren't interesting. I find it hypocritical to say one thing but showing young people something totally different to get more $$$. BET has went downhill for awhile. It doesn't represent the majority of black people today who are geared towards success and making a difference, but just showing ignorance.

BET progressively went downhill when they discontinued positive programming like "Teen Summit." They started falling into the trap of trying to appeal to the wrong type of audience.

I agree with 1 and 2 because BET has started to feed into the negative stereotype of Black people which it did not support initially.

I don't watch BET because the shows are dumb, the music is crap, and I'm just way beyond that stuff at this point in my life.
It takes a lot for me to watch black shows in general because they really haven't been of quality since the Cosby Show and A Different World. It bugs me that black shows are so hung up on being black. I grew up middle-class and lived in the suburbs with two-parents. We used slang, but only when it was appropriate. Church was not a huge part of my families life, and we did not have a traditional sunday dinner. My mom was RN and my Dad was a cop. We struggled sometimes, and we had family members who did some unsavory things, but again, it did not dominate our lives. The only show that came remotely close to this was Moesha. Girlfriends did on occasion, but at times came off contrived and unrealistic. But get this, Kelsey Grammar (Frasier) produced Girlfriends!
Anyway, I got off the topic, I do not watch BET because the shows don't promote anything positive and the music they do show is not music I listen to for the most part. I hardly see Talib Kweli, Little Brother, Sade, Mos Def, Ledisi, Maysa, MF Doom on there. I only see Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Young Joc, and performers like that. I don't subscribe to the messages in their music.

I don't support BET mainly because I don't like the music videos. I'm not a fan of the "crap" music they have put been putting out lately. It gives Blacks a bad image! My brother tells me about other shows like "Hell Date" and "Take the Cake". He says they aren't as bad as the videos, but I wouldn't know. My boyfriend convinced me to watch a movie he likes, and I did for him. Big mistake! It seems like they barely edit any of the movies they show.
