I'd get AVG....it's a very fine anti-virus program...very efficient, too, and is not a resource hog...and it's FREE. (Plus, it's always being updated...sometimes three or four times a day.)
And I'd use LavaSoft Ad-Aware in conjunction with it. It's a free spyware program, that will also pick up viruses as well.
If nothing else, download both of these and try them while you're deciding what other software to get.
Good luck!

For A Free Anti-Virus, I Recommed AVG Free Edition:
AVG Free Edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-pr...
With A 82.82%% Detection Rate its Not Bad.
For Your Anti-Malware Protection I Recommend
AVG Anti-Spyware
This Anti-Spyware Really Packs A Punch.
Don't Be Fooled By The Trial Period.
After The Trial Period This Will Be Disabled But The Scanner Is Yours For Life.
So To Be Fully Protected, Scan And Update Atleast Once A Week.
Download AVG Anti-Spyware Free.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-pr...
And For Your Free Firewall I Recommend;
COMODO Firewall Pro.
Its Very Secure, Very Easy To Use, Very Light On Your RAM And Yet Very Attractive.
I've Used It And Never Looked Backed.
Download It:

It's Free For As Long As You Live.

You are not alone in complaining about the slowness and instability of Norton.
I run a computer repair business in Ohio, and here is the combo that I recommend to all of my customers:
-AVG Antivirus (Free or Full)
-Ad-aware (Free or Full) AND Spybot
-Windows XP Firewall or Sygate Personal Firewall
All of these can be downloaded at download.com. I have yet to find an all-in-one from any company that does the job that these do.
With this combination, your system will run faster with more stability. It will also catch more viruses, adware, and spyware than what Norton currently does.

I agree with Sly Old Mole, those are the best applications and I personally use all of them. The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
I only recommend buying NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):

Ok, Norton is aweful fotware and actually quite a pain to remove. First thing is that you want to search the internet for a norton removal tool. Make sure that norton is disabled before you run it. As far as a new program goes I highly reccomend the Panda Internet Security Suite. This is excellent software that doesn't bog down your machine. https://shop.pandasoftware.com/categorias.aspx?categoria=Particulares(CatalogoPanda)&pais=63&idioma=en-us&track=75400

You're right it is slowing you down. Remove it completely using the Norton removal tool. Download AVG as an anti-virus program. Go to Comodo.com and download malware remover (called boclean) which works all the time - you need not run it for it to work. I suggest you do the downloads first, diconnect from the net, then do the removal, reboot, load AVG and boclean. You should not be connected without protection.
