People have different ways of expressing - or coping with -grief. Some remain calm and almost stoic (altho deep inside, they could be dying in pain) while others are more verbal in their wailing and crying.
There is no "better" way of saying final goodbyes. How we react is a natural uncontrollable thing. Inspite of what "ms. manners" say, emotions at wakes or funerals are spontaneous.

I would say better whispered, if there was that chance. At least, the goodbyes are properly said. I hear a lot of stories from OFW friends on how they felt so miserable to not even be able to say goodbye, coming home to their loved ones lying in the casket, mourning their goodbye.
Preparing for death, if only I know when, is also my preference. I would like to go the way the professor in the best-selling book Tuesdays with Morrie did.
I was so affected by that story I actually embarked on a search for my favorite grade school teacher. That is yet another story.

I would say goodbye to dear ones when dies and bid farewell for it would be better that way than to mourn for sometimes and forget everything after a while.

I think that when the casket is being lowered, it is better to cry our hearts out. We may never have the chance to do that again.
Afterwards, at the passing of days, we whisper to the wind, and let it whisper back.

Whisper or in your thoughts. You can sing it too if you want. As long as it comes from the heart. <*-*>
