Yes. There is always work in everything, provided you have the right network, the right attitude and the right skills.

I think you could get a job with that skill set but I also believe you will need to know more to be able to keep it for an extended period of time. In this business you will need to be constantly learning new things.

While they are teaching HTML the old way with tables in High Schools they are typically not teaching CSS or JavaScript. Dynamic HTML requires all three of those skills.

You should add server side programming languages in your future as well as a DBMS.

Keep in mind that a web designer is far different then a web developer or programmer. Many graphic artists out there claim to be web designers without knowing even HTML. Take a look at many of the marketing companies as well they typically hire coders to turn their images into websites for them.

One of the things that most people here have not even considered is creating websites that conform to the international standards for accessibility. That is going to be a huge undertaking should it become law here in the USA like it has in other areas.

Target corporation currently has a class action lawsuit against them for their website not being accessible to the blind. The outcome of that lawsuit might change a lot in the web design industry.

Here is a link to more info on that lawsuit

Realistically, no.

To get a job as a web designer, you'd have to know most, if not all of the following languages:

(X)HTML, CSS, PHP/Perl/Ruby, MySQL/PostgreSQL/Oracle, Flash, Javascript (with lots of AJAX knowledge), XML.

You'd also have to know Photoshop, Adobe Flash, Dreamweaver or other such programs.

You'd also need a solid portfolio of previous work. But that's true of any job really.

Hi, would it be possible to see a portfolio, and we could take it from there, I'm looking for a competent graphics designer to work on an exciting web project. Regards, Mitch.

It's possible, depending where you go and when they need. You can at least start your own webmaster business. You would eventually want to learn other technologies though to go farther in the field.

There are too many programs available now that automatically generate web pages that your talent is not needed by the average company. Everyone is now learning that in high school.

What you really need is talent in designing web sites. How they look and the interaction between user and site.

You have to learn a server-side langage in addition (php, asp, perl or ruby, etc.) to have some chances to get a job as a web developper!

You should try, but better try php, c#, c++, java - the solid programming languages, that will build you professionality, so you will be able to do your best. Learn everything on w3schools and you are prepared.

You might be able to freelance building simple informational sites. Or you could build your own storefront or affiliate site with those skills.
